About Us

Derek Underwood MBE - Patron
Club Patron Derek Underwood is one of England’s greatest cricketers. He qualified to join The Primary Club twice in one day, being dismissed first ball in each innings, playing for Kent against South Africa in 1965. “Deadly” Derek was one of the most accurate bowlers the game has known. In 86 test matches he took 297 wickets at an average of 25.83. Derek works tirelessly for the Club, making speeches, receiving donations and handing out cheques for grants to schools and clubs for the visually impaired. When The Primary Club puts out a cricket team, Derek usually captains the side.
Robert Fleming - Chairman (chairman@primaryclub.org)
Robert Fleming retired from the world of television production in 1996 and became Hon Sec of The Primary Club. In 2004 he became chairman and now co-ordinates volunteers working on fundraising, membership recruitment, press and PR and special events. On the cricket field, Fleming was a purveyor of vicious in-swing bowling off the wrong foot. The result was an occasional wicket and a replacement left hip and right knee. As a batsman he promised much but seldom delivered.
Chris Larlham - Hon. Sec. (secretary@primaryclub.org)
Chris Larlham took early retirement from the practice of the law in the City in 1998, having spent most of the previous 30 years trying not to let it interfere with his passion for playing or watching cricket. He was first signed up for the Primary Club by the late Leslie Harris in the 60s or 70s. In 2005 he celebrates 40 years as a member of Surrey C C C - until recently a fruitless pursuit.

Ross Midgley - Hon. Treasurer (treasurer@primaryclub.org)
Ross Midgley, the Hon. Treasurer, is a chartered accountant who worked in two major professional firms before becoming Finance and IT director of the international accountancy body ACCA. Ross took early retirement in 2004 to concentrate on developing Crocus, a successful chain of day nurseries, of which he and his wife are directors. An enthusiastic but very indifferent wicketkeeper-batsman, Ross shares with the Hon. Secretary - who lives in the same Essex village - a passion for bridge, wine and oysters. He is married to Alison, with three daughters.
Helen Cleaves - Press, PR (press@primaryclub.org)
Helen Cleaves has worked with the Club since June 2004, providing us with her invaluable PR expertise. Helen works for a leading PR company in London, specialising in Technology PR.
Peter Matthews - Head of Fundraising (sponsorship@primaryclub.org)
Peter Matthews, “a Gloucestershire man through and through”, has become the Club’s first Head of Fundraising.
Peter, who is a partner in the accountancy firm Ernst and Young, lives with his wife Jeannie and
their three young daughters near Cirencester. He broadcasts on BBC local radio on football and cricket and has written two books on football. His next book, on Gloucestershire cricket, is due out next year.
